Shoe Talk: How to Properly Care for Your Shoes
September 2016

I have a confession to make: I'm a shoe addict. My closet is filled with beautiful designer shoes that I've collected over the years, and I've learned that taking proper care of them is essential to keeping them looking brand new.
Today I'm sharing my best tips and tricks for maintaining your shoe collection, whether you're investing in designer pieces or just want to make your everyday shoes last longer.
Essential Shoe Care Tools
Before we dive into specific care instructions, let's talk about the tools you'll need in your shoe care arsenal:
- Shoe trees (cedar is best for absorbing moisture)
- Soft-bristle brush for cleaning
- Quality leather conditioner
- Suede protector spray
- Microfiber cloths
- Shoe polish in neutral and matching colors
Leather Shoe Care
Leather shoes require regular maintenance to keep them looking their best. After each wear, wipe them down with a soft cloth to remove dirt and dust. Use shoe trees immediately after wearing to help maintain their shape and absorb moisture.
Apply leather conditioner every few months to prevent the leather from drying out and cracking. This is especially important if you live in a dry climate or during winter months.
Suede & Nubuck Care
Suede requires special attention. Always spray new suede shoes with a protector before wearing them for the first time. This creates a barrier against water and stains.
Use a suede brush to gently remove dirt, brushing in one direction. For stubborn stains, a suede eraser can work wonders. Avoid wearing suede in wet weather whenever possible.
Patent Leather Care
Patent leather is relatively low-maintenance but can scuff easily. Wipe with a damp cloth after each wear, and use a patent leather cleaner for any marks or scuffs.
Storage Tips
Proper storage is just as important as regular cleaning:
- Store shoes in their dust bags or boxes
- Keep them away from direct sunlight
- Use silica gel packets in storage to absorb moisture
- Don't stack shoes on top of each other
- Rotate your shoes regularly to extend their life
When to See a Professional
Some situations call for professional help. If you have deep scratches, significant water damage, or need sole repairs, take your shoes to a reputable cobbler. It's worth the investment to properly restore expensive designer pieces.
"Remember, proper shoe care isn't just about maintaining appearances—it's about protecting your investment and ensuring your favorite pairs last for years to come."
