My Fraxel Laser Treatment Experience + a Photo Diary

March 2024

Fraxel Laser Treatment

I've been curious about Fraxel laser treatments for years, and I finally took the plunge. Here's my complete experience, including what it's like, the downtime, and whether I think it's worth it. Plus, I'm sharing day-by-day photos of my healing process.

What is Fraxel?

Fraxel is a fractional laser treatment that creates thousands of tiny wounds in your skin, triggering your body's natural healing process. This stimulates collagen production and replaces damaged skin with fresh, healthy tissue. It's used to treat fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and overall skin texture.

Why I Decided to Try It

I wanted to address some sun damage from my 20s (when I wasn't as diligent about SPF), improve my overall skin texture, and work on some hyperpigmentation. My esthetician recommended Fraxel as the most effective treatment for these concerns.

The Treatment Process

Before the treatment, they applied numbing cream for about 45 minutes. The treatment itself took about 20 minutes. I won't lie - even with numbing, it was uncomfortable. It feels like tiny rubber bands snapping against your skin, with intense heat. The intensity varies depending on the settings used.

Immediate Aftermath (Day 0-1)

My face was SWOLLEN. I looked like I had the worst sunburn of my life. It was hot and felt tight. They sent me home with ice packs and gentle cleanser. Sleep propped up to minimize swelling.

The Healing Process

Days 2-3:

Still very red and swollen. Skin felt like sandpaper. Started to develop a bronze/brown appearance as the damaged skin began to surface. This is called "MEND" (Microscopic Epidermal Necrotic Debris) - basically, the old skin coming to the surface.

Days 4-5:

The peeling began! My skin started flaking off in patches. It was tempting to pick, but DON'T. Let it come off naturally. I kept my skin very moisturized with Aquaphor and gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer.

Days 6-7:

Most of the peeling was done. My new skin underneath was pink and sensitive, but already looked smoother and more even-toned.

Week 2:

Redness fading significantly. Could wear makeup again (mineral only). Skin texture noticeably improved.

The Results

By week 4, I could really see the results. My skin tone was more even, sun spots had faded significantly, and my overall texture was smoother. The collagen production continues for months, so results keep improving over time.

Aftercare Tips

  • Keep skin very moisturized - I used Aquaphor and Elta MD moisturizer
  • Avoid active ingredients for at least 2 weeks
  • SPF is non-negotiable - your skin is extremely sun-sensitive
  • Don't pick at peeling skin
  • Sleep on clean pillowcases
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for the first few days

Is It Worth It?

For me, absolutely yes. The downtime was real - plan for a full week where you won't want to be seen - but the results have been incredible. My skin looks years younger and healthier. That said, it's not cheap (mine was $1,500), and you need to be able to take time off for healing.

If you're considering Fraxel, make sure to see a board-certified dermatologist or experienced provider. The skill of your provider makes a huge difference in results and safety!
