The Dyson Hairdryer Review: Is it Worth it?
December 2024

The Dyson Supersonic hair dryer costs around $430. That's a LOT of money for a hair dryer. After using mine for over a year, I'm sharing my honest thoughts on whether this luxury hair tool is actually worth the investment.
Why I Bought It
I have long, thick hair that takes forever to dry. I was going through cheap hair dryers every year or two, and my hair was showing heat damage despite using heat protectant. I decided to invest in a tool that would last and potentially be better for my hair's health.
What Makes It Different
The Dyson Supersonic uses Air Multiplier technology and intelligent heat control. It measures the air temperature 40 times per second to prevent extreme heat damage. The motor is in the handle (not the head), making it lighter and more balanced than traditional dryers.
The Pros
1. Drying Speed
This thing is FAST. My thick hair that used to take 20-25 minutes now takes 10-12 minutes. That's a significant time savings, especially when I'm blow drying 3-4 times a week.
2. Hair Health
My hair is noticeably healthier since switching to the Dyson. Less split ends, more shine, and it feels stronger. The intelligent heat control really does make a difference.
3. Attachments
It comes with multiple magnetic attachments - smoothing nozzle, styling concentrator, and diffuser. They attach instantly with magnets and stay put while drying.
4. Quieter
It's much quieter than traditional hair dryers. I can still hear the TV or have a conversation while using it.
5. Lightweight and Balanced
The weight distribution is so much better than regular dryers. My arm doesn't get tired, even during longer blow dry sessions.
The Cons
1. The Price
Obviously, $430 is A LOT for a hair dryer. It's a significant investment that not everyone can or should make.
2. Learning Curve
It works differently than traditional dryers. It took me a few uses to figure out the best technique and settings for my hair.
3. Cord Length
Some people find the cord a bit short. It hasn't been an issue for me, but worth noting if you have a large bathroom or like to move around a lot while drying.
The Math: Is It Worth It?
Here's how I justified it:
- I was buying $40-60 hair dryers every 1-2 years
- The Dyson comes with a 2-year warranty and is built to last much longer
- If it lasts 5+ years, the cost per year is comparable or better
- The time savings (10 minutes per use, 3-4x per week) adds up significantly
- Healthier hair means less money on treatments and cuts to fix damage
Who Should Buy It
- People with thick, long hair that takes forever to dry
- Anyone who blow dries frequently (3+ times per week)
- People with damaged hair looking to minimize heat damage
- Those who can genuinely afford the investment without financial stress
Who Can Skip It
- People with fine or short hair that air dries easily
- Anyone who rarely blow dries their hair
- Those on a budget - there are good mid-range options around $100-150
My Final Verdict
After a year of daily use, I can confidently say the Dyson Supersonic is worth it FOR ME. My hair is healthier, drying time is cut in half, and it shows no signs of wear. If you blow dry frequently and can afford it without financial strain, I think it's a worthwhile investment in your hair's health.
However, if you're stretching your budget or don't blow dry often, there are excellent alternatives at lower price points. A good hair dryer doesn't have to be expensive to be effective.
Rating: 9/10 - Would absolutely repurchase. The only reason it's not a 10 is the price barrier.
