Bag Talk: How to Choose Designer Handbags

August 2016

Designer Bag Collection

One of the most frequented topics I get asked about is designer handbags. I get asked everything from where I buy (when it's second hand), how I choose my next bag, how I take care of them and where I sell them, when it's time to move on. So, I'm finally working on a post that's going to answer any questions you might have.

On that note, I'm also starting to think about what my next handbag purchase will be. From my own collection, there are several bags that I'm going to let go of (don't wear anymore and slightly over them), and "in exchange" I want to get something new and exciting.

How I Choose My Handbags

When it comes to choosing designer handbags, I consider several factors that help me make the right investment. Here's my thought process:

1. Versatility

Will this bag work with multiple outfits? I always try it on with several outfits and coats before making a final decision. The only way I'll know if it's "the one," is by trying it on with different looks.

2. Investment Value

Does this bag hold its value? Brands like Chanel, Celine, and Hermès tend to retain their value over time, making them smart investment pieces. If I'm spending over $2,000, I want to ensure it's a piece that will hold its worth.

3. Functionality

How practical is the bag for my lifestyle? I consider the size, strap options, and how much it can hold. A beautiful bag that doesn't fit my essentials isn't worth the investment.

4. Timelessness

Is this a classic style or a trend? While I do buy trendy pieces, my more expensive purchases are always classic styles that will look current for years to come.

My Current Collection

My Celine collection holds a special place in my heart. I love the clean, minimalist aesthetic and the quality craftsmanship. The Celine Nano, Phantom, and Box Bag are my go-to pieces that I rotate regularly.

Buying Second-Hand

I'm often asked how I know if a bag is authentic when buying second-hand. Here are my tips:

  • Buy from reputable sellers with authentication services
  • Check the stitching, hardware, and materials carefully
  • Compare with authentic pieces online or in-store
  • When in doubt, get it authenticated by a professional service
  • Save all receipts and authenticity cards

Care & Maintenance

Taking proper care of your designer bags ensures they last for years. I always store my bags in their dust bags when not in use, stuff them with tissue paper to maintain their shape, and keep them away from direct sunlight.

For leather bags, I use a quality leather cleaner and conditioner regularly. For suede and delicate materials, I take them to professionals for cleaning.

"To all my handbag ladies, what's your favorite handbag of the moment? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!"
